The English Language Arts and Reading TEKS emphasizes the interconnected skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking through seven integrated strands: foundational skills, comprehension, response, genres, author’s craft, composition, and research. These strands promote academic oracy, authentic reading, and reflective writing to support literacy across Texas. They are designed to be progressive, helping students build increasingly complex skills to think critically and adapt to the evolving nature of language and literacy. (19 TAC Chapter 110)
